We are busily making fresh lefse to sell at Blue Mounds Heritage Day. Come visit us at our booth along Division Street from 8am-3 pm as we sell lefse, pie by the slice, pasty, baked goods and old fashioned jams like grandma used to make. All proceeds will benefit the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society and the Mount Horeb Food Pantry, which serves Blue Mounds as well.

Schedule of Events

Pie Workshop

Learn how to make several types of pie crusts and luscious pie fillings at a workshop co-hosted by the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society and the Mount Horeb Senior Center. The workshop will take place on Saturday, September 10^th at West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church from 1 -4 pm. Tastings and taking home pies are part of the fun!

Pre-registration is appreciated . Registration is $15 and may be mailed to the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society in care of Cindy Downs, 2915 Dolomite Springs Circle, Blue Mounds 53517.

Please pre-register by August 30^th if possible. Proceeds will benefit the Mount Horeb Senior Center and Blue Mounds Area Historical Society.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:

August 7th: 8:30 AM-3 PM shifts for the Blue Mounds Heritage Day/Centurion Bike Race

Help sell lefse, jam.cookies, bars and pie-by-the-slice to the spectators for the Centurion race as the bicyclists come through town. Funds raised will be shared with the Mount Horeb Senior Center, which also serves Blue Mounds.

September 18th: 11 AM Festival of the Mounds Parade

Looking for individuals to walk with us in the parade in costume. We also are in need of a wagon for our float.

Saturday, October 1st: Step Into the Past Rendezvous 10 AM- 4 PM. Volunteer shifts available to help with childrens old-fashion games, and at the entry booth. Time commitment of 1-2 hour shifts are appreciated.

Step Into the Past 2010

The Step Into the Past Rendezvous, held this past weekend at Brigham County Park, offered an opportunity for visitors to witness life and life skills of the mid-1800′s. The event was sponsored by Blue Mounds Area Historical Society.

The ‘hawk throw is a favorite at the Step Into the Past rendezvous. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk to see if they can cut the card which is mounted on a chunk of wood.

The set up of lodges at the Step Into the Past Rendezvous this past weekend at Brigham County Park gave visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in history, try wild turkey stew, learn about blacksmithing, and listen to fiddle music as they strolled through the event sponsored by Blue Mounds Area Historical Society.

Jam Workshop
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make such yummy jams such as peach, rhubarb, cherry, or blackberry?

We have an opportunity for you to learn the lost art of creating your own wonderful jams and jellies. Blue Mounds Area Historical Society will be hosting a Jam Workshop on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 1-4 PM at the West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church. Registration fee $15, proceeds will be shared with the Mount Horeb Senior Center which also serves Blue Mounds.

You will get to take home some of your own creations. Proceeds will be used for projects at Fort Blue Mounds, our future history room, and for a Pokerville road side historical marker .

Step Into the Past Rendezvous
October 2, 2010
Come join us for a beautiful fall day filled with fun as we host our 5th
annual rendezvous! The event will be open to the public from 10 AM-
4 PM at Brigham County Park, north of the village of Blue Mounds on
County F.
This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in history and see
such things as spinning, a period weapons display, period costumes
and more. Try your hand at the hawk throw just like the settlers did,
and sample some turtle soup. This promises to be a memorable day!

Admission is by suggested donation of $2 per person, or $10 per

Fort Blue Mound Re-dedication details are here! Come join us on Saturday, May 22nd at 2 PM at the fort site. Senator Jon Erpenbach and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk will be in attendence for this historic event!

The afternoon event includes: a re-creation of the Return of the Hall Sisters to General Henry Dodge: Bob Birmingham, retired state archaeologist who did the site excavation will speak on the fort, his findings and his upcoming book: Life, Death, and Archaeology at Fort Blue Mounds: A Settler’s Fortification of the Black Hawk War (Wisconsin Historical Society Press).

The marker will be unveiled and refreshments will be available. The public is encouraged to attend. Members of the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society will be on hand to answer questions about the fort and the project as well as the historical society itself.

Parking is in the Village of Blue Mounds industrial park along Blackhawk Drive and in the parking lot of Midwest Prototyping. There will be a designated access point from the parking lot.

The Blue Mounds Area Historical Society began in late 2004. Affiliation with the State Historical Society was completed in June of 2005.

Projects of interest to the society are:

Compiling an oral history of the area
Preservation of the historic Fort Blue Mounds site
Creating a traveling exhibit for display
Creating a walking tour of historic Blue Mounds
Obtaining a building for permanent displays of historic artifacts

Our Mission: ”To protect, preserve, interpret, and increase the public awareness of the natural, social, and architectural history of the Blue Mounds Area.”
